Fuel saving tips

Fuel-Saving-Image-Cropped

When fuel burns it releases energy, and higher octane fuel theoretically means higher performance as it can withstand more compression before detonating. Therefore, the potential for better performance using higher octane fuel does exist, but the difference depends on a variety of factors. Firstly, the design of the engine plays a role, with some engine designs responding with noticeably improved performance when the correct fuel is used. In fact, most vehicles are now designed to use a specific octane, and in some cases using any other fuel can affect the engine warranty.

Important Tip: Always refer to your vehicle’s handbook and use the recommended octane fuel. If your car can run on the lower octane, rather use that as it will save you quite a bit of cash.

It’s also important to note that performance is dependent on driving conditions. At the coast, 95 higher octane fuel is best as the air pressure at these lower altitudes gives the best performance and economy. The higher the altitude the lower the air pressure, and the lower the need for a high octane fuel as there is no real performance gain. In this case, 93 low octane fuel is probably a better compromise in terms of cost and economy.

Another factor to consider is the model of your engine. More modern engines may run better on higher octane fuel, especially if they have turbo or superchargers. The difference will be more apparent for older vehicles on long- distance trips, where you’re likely to get more mileage for your money. Unless your engine is turbo or supercharged, you should go for 93.

Lastly, different fuel suppliers use different additives in their fuel, meaning that one 95 may differ slightly from one supplier to the next.

When filling up, it’s always good to weigh up your options. And while the cheaper option may work for your pocket, it could give you less mileage in the long run.

A few vehicle tips

Summer-car-maintenance-tips

Tyres
* Know the correct tyre pressures for your car and check them at least every two weeks using a good-quality gauge or garage air line. Correct pressures are normally displayed in the driver door frame or hand book.
* Check tyre tread and condition, look for cuts on sidewalls. If any one tyre needs regular top-ups, it may have a slow puncture.
* Don’t forget to check the spare wheel.

Toolkit
* Check the handbook for the location of the basic toolkit for the car that should contain at least a jack and wheel removal tools.
* Familiarise yourself with the jacking points used to lift the car safely.
* If locking wheel nuts are fitted make sure that the toolkit includes the key or removal tool.

Engine oil
* Check the dipstick at least every fortnight and before any long journey.
* Have the oil and filter changed at recommended service intervals using oil of the correct specification.
* High oil consumption can indicate engine problems.

Water
* Check the coolant level regularly and top up as necessary. Only do this when the engine is cold.
* Have the antifreeze concentration checked before winter.
* Antifreeze prevents the build-up of corrosion within the cooling system as well as stopping the coolant freezing. It should be used all year round.

Wipers
* Wiper blades wear down over time and smear the windscreen if they become worn.
* Replace them at least once a year for best performance.

Screenwash
* Check and top up regularly – it’s a legal requirement that the system works.
* Use a good soap additive through summer and winter. Water alone won’t clear oily road grime and freezes more readily in winter.

Windscreen
* Check regularly for stone damage as this can impair vision or distract attention.
* Minor chips can cause cracks in the glass but many can be repaired by a windscreen specialist.

Lights
* Check all lights weekly. Don’t forget indicators, brake, tail, head and fog lights.
* Clean lights regularly.

Power steering
* Ensure that you check the fluid level at least once a month.
* Pop up only using the correct hydraulic fluid as advised in the car handbook.
